I'm a digital entrepreneur from Addis Ababa. I founded InnovixOpia, I build things on the internet, and I'm trying to help Ethiopia's next generation do the same.

From Passion to Business
My name is Shagiz Zelalem — ሻጊዝ ዘላለም. I was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and I've been fascinated by the internet and technology for as long as I can remember. While most people around me saw the internet as a place to consume, I saw it as a place to build.
I started learning web design on my own — watching tutorials, experimenting, failing, and trying again. That curiosity eventually turned into real skills, and those skills turned into a business. That business is InnovixOpia.
I founded InnovixOpia to solve a very specific problem I kept seeing: Ethiopian businesses with genuine potential but no digital presence to match it. Great products, talented people, strong ideas — but invisible online. I wanted to change that.
The Journey
I started by building simple websites for myself, then for friends and small local businesses. No formal training — just YouTube, documentation, and a lot of trial and error. I learned HTML, CSS, WordPress, then moved into graphic design and branding. Each project taught me something I couldn't have learned any other way.
After working with enough clients independently, I realized that a freelancer approach had limits. To do this properly — to actually help businesses the way they needed — I needed a team, a process, and a brand. So I built one. InnovixOpia started as a small operation and grew into a full-service digital agency, serving clients across Ethiopia.
Today InnovixOpia offers web design, web development, branding, SEO, digital marketing, social media management, content creation, photography, video editing, and hosting. Every service exists because a client needed it and we figured out how to deliver it well. We're based in Addis Ababa and serve businesses across Ethiopia and beyond.
Beyond client work, I'm focused on building this platform — a place where I share what I know about digital entrepreneurship, web design, SEO, and business. My goal is to help more young Ethiopians see the internet not just as a tool to use, but as a place to build businesses, create income, and compete globally.
What I Believe
These aren't company values on a poster. They're the things that have actually guided how I work and make decisions.
A beautiful website that doesn't bring in clients is just decoration. Everything I build — websites, brand identities, SEO strategies — is measured by whether it actually helps the business. Aesthetics matter, but they're the vehicle, not the destination.
If something won't work, I say so. If a project is going to take longer than expected, I tell you early. I'd rather have a difficult conversation upfront than deliver something that doesn't meet expectations. Most problems in client work come from poor communication, not poor skills.
Digital marketing, web technology, and SEO change constantly. What worked two years ago might be outdated today. I invest real time in staying current — following industry developments, testing new tools, and updating my approach when something better comes along.
Everything I build is grounded in the Ethiopian context. I understand the local market, the cultural nuances, and the real challenges Ethiopian businesses face online. Global standards, local knowledge — that combination is what makes the work actually useful here.
Quick fixes and shortcuts don't interest me. I build websites that are structurally sound, SEO strategies that compound over time, and brand identities that grow with the business. The goal is always something that lasts — not something that looks good in a screenshot.
I've learned a lot from free resources — articles, videos, communities. I want to give that back. Through this blog and my content, I share what I know about digital entrepreneurship so that others in Ethiopia don't have to start from zero the way I did.
